Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire
For a place with such a low profile, Howden stands out a mile thanks to its Minster tower, which is visible from way off. This magnificent church dates back to the eighth century and is particularly noted for its chancel ruins. The historic Market Town has undergone something of a revival in recent years and is fast becoming one of the most desirable locations to live in the East Riding of Yorkshire. |

Howden has a beautifully preserved Georgian town centre with narrow cobbled streets. The central market square once played host the greatest 19 th century royal horse fair in Europe and there are said to be more pubs here per square half mile than anywhere else in the country . |

The Bishops Manor House annually plays host to concerts in its grounds, while the public park plays host to cricket tournaments and bowling on the lush greens. A climb up Bishop Skirlaws Tower in the Minster is rewarded by lovely views of the town and surrounding countryside. On the outskirts of town, Howden Marsh is a lovely place for a quiet stroll, with a lake and small islands which have become a habitat for birds and wildlife. Howden Show is held each summer and includes the annual Fun Run, horticulture and livestock shows, and local handicraft and food stalls. Howden Festival is a packed week of music, drama, speakers, exhibitions and activities for all ages. The Shire Hall, now a grade 2 listed building, was built in 1871 as a market hall and meeting place, and is now used as a multi-functional building for community hires such as parties, weddings, fund raising events, and weekly classes. It is also used as a part-time Arts Centre with live music, theatre, comedy and Cinema Showings. |
